Hi Everybody,

As some of you are approaching deadlines already, I have produced a short video which shows students how to submit an assignment using Turnitin within WebCT. The video can be seen at http://screenr.com/6pN .

I would ask that you only use this as a preview. If you would like to make this video available for students, please use the 'Download the
.mp4 file' link on the right of the screen and upload it to WebCT.
Alternatively, reply to this email with your module number(s) and I will publish it for you. If you are teaching in a room with AV facilities, you may also wish to show the video as part of your lecture/tutorial.

Again, there is a comprehensive staff guide available at http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/aa/landt/docs/KeeleStaffGuideTII2009.pdf .
This will guide you through the process of setting up a Turnitin assignment.

Thanks,

Marketing Blunder

EA blasted over questionable marketing stunt
by Ben Silverman

July 24 6:15 P.M.
Games maker EA has incited a wave of backlash over the latest marketing ploy for their upcoming action game, Dante's Inferno.

In an effort to promote the title at last week's San Diego Comic-Con event, EA decided to run a contest asking showgoers to "commit acts of lust" with any models working at the convention's myriad booths. They were then instructed to submit photos via social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook. The winner would receive "dinner and a sinful night with two hot girls, a limo service, paparazzi and a chest full of booty," while five runners-up would have to make do with a copy of the game, a $240 gift card and assorted game merchandise.

Of course, EA gave themselves an out, noting on the official rules page that "...judges reserve the right, in their sole and absolute discretion, to disqualify any Submissions that are inappropriate for any reason, including without limitation, for depicting or mentioning sex, violence, drugs, alcohol and/or inappropriate language." In other words, don't get crazy while you commit your "acts of lust."

Unfortunately for EA, the gaming community hasn’t responded well. Twitter posts about the marketing effort have been largely negative; tweets to #EAfail have spiked, with many accusing the company of being tasteless, immature and sexist. In turn, those responsible have issued a respectful if unapologetic tweet right back:

"'Commit acts of lust' is simply a tongue-in-cheek way to say take pictures with costumed reps," it reads. "Also, a ‘Night of Lust’ means only that the winner will receive a chaperoned VIP night on the town with the Dante's Inferno reps, all expenses paid, as well as other prizes."

It's just the latest EA marketing stunt to go awry. Back in April, the company got in hot water for sending journalists illegal brass knuckles to promote their game based on The Godfather II. And at the E3 trade show in early June, EA angered Christian groups after making waves with a viral marketing campaign for -- you guessed it -- Dante's Inferno, this time featuring fake protesters.
Dante himself never had this much trouble.

***Take aways***

Something to learn from this article, as much as the marketing sounded really attractive (by using sex appeal) and quite incline with the Dante's theme (for those that have played this game before), it was an entire marketing blunder. Marketing for gamers are an entirely different segment. Furthermore, consumers nowadays are more conservative and know their rights (and most probably those protesters are not hardcore gamers).

Let me know your thougthts:

1) How do you market a game to the gamer's community?

2) What did they majorly done wrong in this marketing stunt?

3) Does sex appeal really sells?

Please leave your comments, this will help widen your ability to identify, think critically, give a proper answer and increase your knowledge.

Calvin

Please do enjoy yourself but do not give everything you learnt throughout the semester back to your lecturers or textbooks. Anyway, i have been commission to embark on a new journey for Keele programme. It will be a journey and i will need all of your help for it. I will try my best to show it to you step by step how it will be done and hopefully, make your college life an enjoyable experience.

Reassessment and Resit

Thursday, April 16, 2009 / Posted by Keele_PL /

Dear all,

Due to the fact that results was out late, reassessment period has been pushed back till May. If you want to know which component you need to re-sit or reassess, kindly check your Keele WebMail. Some brief instructions are given there. Following are things that you need to know about your reassessment and/or resit :-

1) Check which component you fail (either the assignment or exam)

2) You only do the component that you fail.

3) Resit amount is RM200, the form are available on top of Ms Sheela's desk.

4) Get a form, fill it up, pay at A&B, return me the form and receipt.

5) Once that is done, I will pass you your question and you can begin to do.

6) Last day for payment is 24 April 2009. The sooner you pay, the more time you get to do your assignment.

7) Dateline for all submission is 8 May 2009.

8) As of now, exams resit dates are from 11-15 May 2009. If the resit questions are the same as the Year 1 Semester 1 students, your resit exams will follow the current exam timetable.

I guess thats all for now. All the best and please dont stress yourself out.

Advancing to the Next Level

Friday, April 03, 2009 / Posted by Keele_PL /

Dear students,

Congratulations for those that have done well last semester and for those that didnt do too well, don't worry, there are still place for improvement and opportunities.

Here are some information that might aid you:

1) For all Year 1 papers, it is 10 credits each.

2) You can proceed to Year 2 as long as you have a minimum of 100 credits. In other words, you should have 120 credits as you have 6 papers in Sem 1 and another 6 papers in Sem 2.

3) Eventhough you can proceed to Year 2, you will still need to complete all your Year 1 papers.

4) There are TWO re-assessment period in a year. Tentatively, it will be in April and August respectively. You can choose to re-sit in either of this period.

5) However, you can only attempt a paper 3 times (the first time would be when you take it, therefore you will have 2 more re-sit attempts remaining) under the condition that you can ONLY re-sit a particular paper ONCE a year.

6) There are different type of reassessment, some are exams, some are essays. It all depends on the subject re-sit component.

7) If you fail to complete all the papers before you graduate, you DO NOT get your certificate.

8) If you have attempted 3 times and still fail to pass that paper, you will be excluded from the University.

9) There is no limit on the amount of papers you can resit in any assessment period. However, bare in mind that it is important that you can cope with re-sitting multiple papers.

10) If you have to resit any papers, you will be notified by the University through your Keele WebMail.

11) Any resit papers will only have 2 marks. Either you Pass (40) or Fail (39). Therefore, it is important for Year 2 onwards as it will affect your Honours Degree outcome.

12) There will be no appeal attempt if you get marks such as 37 or 38. You will NEVER get a mark of 39 (except if you re-sit). Reason being, your marks would have gone through 3 markers and 2 exam board meeting, therefore, there is no reason to appeal against the final outcome.

13) Of course there will be forms you need to fill up and a re-sit amount to be paid for each re-sit attempt for each paper.

As for now, these are all the information that might be helpful for the near future. Please come and see me if you have any further inquiries. If you ask for something that has already been posted here, you will not be entertained.

Regards,
Calvin

More announcement and Timetable Draft 4

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 / Posted by Keele_PL /

Dear all,

A few updates for this week and the timetable draft 4 effective this week (10.3.09).

Timetable Draft 4

1) Keele University have set 18 March 2009 for the Exam Board Meeting over at UK. Therefore, we are expecting the results to be back the following week.

2) We have ordered most of the books for this semester (as requested by your lecturer) to be shipped over. We hope to get them ASAP. Though it is very difficult to speculate when exactly. Of course you are NOT required to buy a copy each. We will make it available in the library.

3) Keele WebCT password. Alright, ive been spammed with this question. Honestly, i dont know. If you need to access their library or MyAthens, i got something temporary for you to use. If you need to access for your lecture notes (i think some of your lecturers have requested it to be uploaded here) or tutorial assignment, i really have no idea what to do. I guess i need to micro manage and help you from class to class basis. Do come see me regarding this matter.

4) There will be update for the Y1S2 Timetable as there is yet any class for Ms Consilz's tutorial classes.

That should be all for now, remember to come collect your offer letter.

Calvin

Important Notice

Thursday, March 05, 2009 / Posted by Keele_PL /

Dear all,

A few announcement first then a few FAQ to be answered, i guess you all must be feeling pretty frustrated, just to clear some air between us:

1) Please come and collect your Offer Letter from me. For those of you that owe A&B your photo, your transcripts and etc. please submit it to them. If your student file is not complete, you are in big trouble when you 'try' to graduate.

2) If your name is NOT on the attendance list and you have paid, please come and see me. Reason being, the KDU server was facing a severe problem. Some data was captured and the rest wasn't. So whatever A&B did for the past two weeks, a good chunk of it was not captured.

3) If your name is not on the attendance list, that also mean you cant access KCN. Once the above is solved, then you have free roam on KCN.

4) WebCT access: Im sorry for the delay on this. Firstly, i guess we could not start class on the same week as you come back. It is impossible to get it ready for class. Secondly, i am still having new students coming in THIS week though the cut off date was Week 2. Thirdly, a majority of you guys are still changing major in Week 2 and i cant send till you guys CANT change in Week 3. Fourthly, because of the system not capturing your subjects, i cant check against the system. Lastly, there are some inconsiderate people that takes forever to give me their Keele Application Form. So please bare with me while we try to get this done ASAP.

5) For those currently in Y1S2, your results should be out mid March i hope. Its beyond my control once it has been sent out.

6) There will be a new timetable, i cant post it yet, as Timetable Committee has yet to confirmed it. For the Y1 students, i know its a bit tired for you guys. Its Y1, you have 6 subjects, its gonna be very tiring for you all. I promise it will get better when you go into Y2 (Timetable wise, not workload).

I guess thats all for now, sorry for all the trouble. We can always go out have a cup of tea and vent about your frustration.

Sincerely,
Calvin

Dear Y2S1 (HRM) students,

I presume you guys came for 8am class? Sorry i was under the impression that since we were done with Lecture on Monday, we can skip 8am class and go for tutorial at 9am. Anyway, i didnt inform you verbally. So, since everyone missed class today. Can i request for extra class next week 1-2pm, Wednesday? (to replace Monday, 9.3.09 and also Wednesday 4.3.09 class). You are cordially invited to have lunch together from 12-1pm before class, my treat. Attendance will be taken, for Monday and Wednesday class. Let me know if its possible.
